Digital Grisaille

Adobe Photoshop
Graffiti found in NYC

Objective: Create a digital skin, learn the importance of values and contrast

Process 1: The concrete block was drawn from still life using charcoal with really high contrast. Hard edges were used for solid masses, soft edges were used for shadow masses.

Process 2: The analog drawing of the concrete block is put into Photoshop; using curves, the drawing is adjusted to remove the yellowness of the paper. Vanishing lines, plumb lines, and a horizon line were used to correct the drawing, like to adjust foreshortening.
Process 3: The planes of the concrete block and background were built digitally using Photoshop. Digital masks were added. These are some that I experimented with.
